Comparing yourself to your old self or others is the fastest way to fall out of love with your running.
I used to be able to run a sub 3:30 marathon
I used to run sub 18:30 for 5k
I used to be able to complete Ironman triathlons for fun
I used to have a 6 pack
I love a tattoo, on my left calf I got a tattoo from Ironman UK in 2016 at this time I was in the shape of my life, mega fit and shredded.
There was a time when I would look down and feel a bit disappointed, having completed such an epic challenge from the year long training to crossing that line I was riding a serious high and knowing I couldnโt maintain that fitness i was pretty sad.
Comparing myself to my old self. I was 8 years younger than I am now. In my 20โs not 30โs I had different stresses, different responsibilities etc Iโm not that person anymore.
So I changed my mindset pretty fast knowing it wasnโt possible to do what I used to do. I focused on new goals, new experiences and new adventures. I love running and never want that to change
Iโm not saying you canโt get back there, the beauty of our sport is the longevity of it means you can get fast again if you really train for it. Though might be a bit tougher this time round
So please stop worrying about what you used to be able to do!
โข So set new goals
โข Run further
โข Try trail running
โข Try other events/sports
โข Go for age group places
And most importantly keep loving this incredible sport
