Comparing yourself to your old self or others is the fastest way to fall out of love with your running.

I used to be able to run a sub 3:30 marathon

I used to run sub 18:30 for 5k

I used to be able to complete Ironman triathlons for fun

I used to have a 6 pack

I love a tattoo, on my left calf I got a tattoo from Ironman UK in 2016 at this time I was in the shape of my life, mega fit and shredded.

There was a time when I would look down and feel a bit disappointed, having completed such an epic challenge from the year long training to crossing that line I was riding a serious high and knowing I couldnโ€™t maintain that fitness i was pretty sad.

Comparing myself to my old self. I was 8 years younger than I am now. In my 20โ€™s not 30โ€™s I had different stresses, different responsibilities etc Iโ€™m not that person anymore.

So I changed my mindset pretty fast knowing it wasnโ€™t possible to do what I used to do. I focused on new goals, new experiences and new adventures. I love running and never want that to change

Iโ€™m not saying you canโ€™t get back there, the beauty of our sport is the longevity of it means you can get fast again if you really train for it. Though might be a bit tougher this time round

So please stop worrying about what you used to be able to do!

โ€ข So set new goals

โ€ข Run further

โ€ข Try trail running

โ€ข Try other events/sports

โ€ข Go for age group places

And most importantly keep loving this incredible sport
